At Agromart we have started a pilot project on our Sa Volta finca in Porreres with the intention of recovering and preserving several local varieties.
In total, we have planted 4,000 fruit trees of native varieties: figs, apples, plums, peaches, and apricots.
They are ancient varieties, such as the “frare roig” plum or the murtó or galta roja apricot. Commercially, they may be unproductive fruit trees, but the flavor and aroma that this kind of variety gives off is unique, it transports us to the past and is not found in any other fruit.
That’s why we protect and claim them: to not lose our roots.
We hope that in about 4 or 5 years, the fruit trees will begin to reach full production.
We estimate that we will collect around 100,000 kilograms of fruit per year, which we will serve in our 23 stores spread throughout Mallorca.
It’s important to note that many local varieties are progressively being lost due to the arrival of more productive and profitable foreign seeds. However, to give two examples, the “ramellet” tomato or the “xeixa” wheat are two native varieties that have been revalued in recent years.
